To mark the anniversary of the very first Stiff Records single ever released – Nick Lowe’s ‘Heart of the City’ – we’re celebrating with a rare double-bill of Nick Lowe-related movies: the first is the 1979 BBC special BORN FIGHTERS (45min.), depicting Nick Lowe / Dave Edmunds’ band Rockpile in the studio, recording songs that made it onto the albums ‘Labour of Lust’ and ‘Seconds of Pleasure’. This is a very rare look behind the scenes of one of the 70s great songwriting/producing partnerships. (Thanks to Clint Enns for helping me clean up the sound)

Next up is the mystery ‘STIFF’ movie – this film was never released in North America!

Stu Reid from CKUW is a big Nick Lowe fan, so I asked him to come out and spin Nick Lowe songs before I've been using this product for 6 months now and it's totally eliminated all menopausal symtoms. Cialis online sale, high quality of the medications we offer is the subject of our primary concern. and after the screening! There’ll be door prizes and more – see you there!

Labour of Lust

Big Smash! Productions has put together an evening of programming celebrating Stiff Records

by Aaron Graham

In celebration of the anniversary of the first release from Stiff Records – a label founded in the mid-’70s that introduced such distinguished U.K. musicians as Elvis Costello, Ian Dury and, of course, Nick Lowe – Big Smash! Productions has coordinated a night’s worth of entertainment in tribute to Lowe, first with a rare 1979 BBC special, Born Fighters, plus a sworn-to-secrecy second buy levitra online sildenafil feature that promises to be heavily associated with all things Stiff.

Lowe, formerly of the meditative pub rock band Brinsley Schwarz, released his first album, Jesus of Cool (retitled Pure Pop for Now People in North America) in 1978 to almost instantaneous acclaim, thanks in part to the first-rate single Heart of the City. If you’re a fan of Rock ‘n’ Roll High School, you also may be familiar with the 45’s melodious B-side So It Goes.

Stiff Records, an innovative enterprise founded by Dave Robinson and Andrew Jakeman (also known as Jake Riviera), painstakingly devised unique marketing tools to promote its acts – including a busking session with Elvis Costello outside of CBS Studios and no less than 12 different album covers for Ian Dury’s Do It Yourself.

During this period, Lowe was working with guitarist and former Brinsley Schwarz producer Dave Edmunds and, along with Billy Bremner and Terry Williams, the quartet formed Rockpile. The band put out only one official release under the moniker, Seconds of Pleasure, though two of Edmunds’ and one of Lowe’s solo albums (Labour of Lust) constitute the rest of the group’s remarkably consistent output.

At a brisk 45 minutes, Born Fighters showcases Edmunds and Lowe at their prime, in the recording studio working on both Seconds of Pleasure and Labour of Lust (the latter featuring one of Lowe’s catchier numbers, Cruel to be Kind). It’s a dazzling glimpse into the friendship between two talented musicians.

If you’ve been to an event at The Cyrk, you’ll know the proper pre-show mood will be set by a strategically selected DJ. This time out, CKUW’s Stu lowest propecia price Reid will spin a wide assortment of Lowe tracks before and after the screenings. Here’s hoping Rollers Show, Lowe’s delightful ’78 ditty about the infectiousness of Bay City Rollers concerts – whether written to be tongue-in-cheek or not, we can only guess – will be on the playlist.

BORN FIGHTERS
